Welcome to the Gerrards Cross Philosophy Group
We are a friendly, enthusiastic and dynamic group who share a love of philosophy.
We look at ways philosophy can play an important role in everyday life and help us understand issues that confront us, both on a daily basis and in a wider context.
We invite philosophers from all walks of life to give highly interesting and thought-provoking presentations, while encouraging questions and discussion from the attendees, on a varied range of topics. Presentation topics range from historical developments in philosophy, through aspects of what it means to be human and the role morality plays for better or worse, to contemporary issues affecting us such as Artificial Intelligence and its potential impact on our lives.
You are invited to attend our presentations via Zoom and, if so inclined, participate in the discussions, with the chance to open up different fields to augment your interest. The only qualification is a curiosity and an interest in extending your understanding of what philosophy is all about.
Please explore this site to see the range of previous presentations and find information about the upcoming term’s topics and how to subscribe.

“Philosophy is a collaborative activity which changes our understanding of reality and how to live well. Individually we might believe we know what is true or best: collectively we discover that regardless of how much one knows, there is always more to know. New ‘knowledge’ sometimes demonstrates that what we once accepted as true is not. Philosophy shows us that reality is more astonishing than our wildest imaginings! If you think you know, think again!”

“The philosopher will ask ‘Why is this so?’ when faced with an affirmation; ‘Are you sure?’, when reacting to wild statement; ‘On what grounds do you go along with this?’, when confronted with an attitude. For the philosopher, few points of view are likely to be totally cut and dried, right or wrong.”

Ray Billington,
Original tutor, mentor, and muse

The following is a recent comment on participating in the recent term of presentations.
The sessions also offer a generous portion dedicated to group discussion and healthy debating opportunity which I thoroughly enjoyed engaging in……
As a newcomer, I was warmly welcomed and felt right at home. The speakers were diverse and the presentations were rich in content. For someone who loves food for thought, it was incredibly nourishing.,,,,,,
Very excited for the next round of creativity sessions this autumn. I trust anyone who joins this dynamic group will be sure to have a great time, not only enhancing their knowledge but also discussing ideas.
